Anyone paying attention can see that smartphones are becoming ubiquitous. Yet, as I look around I notice that more and more people are using their phones for things other than making phone calls. Does anyone actually own a calculator or a map anymore? With all the apps available for your mobile phone from Apple’s App Store, there is no need.
iPhone Apps
With 350,000 apps, without a doubt, the current leader in the smartphone app name game is Apple’s App Store. In fact, in January, the Apple App Store celebrated its 10 billionth app download (yeah, that’s billion with a ‘b’).
These apps include ringtones and games and are available for use with not only the Apple iPhone, but also with the iPod Touch, the iPad and even for the Mac PC. While some of these apps, like the the XA1 audio spectrum that is used for hi-tech music mixing can cost up to $179, most iPhone apps cost around 99 cents. Many mobile apps are even free, like Jet Fighter Aces, effectively turning your smartphone into a mobile video game console.
The Microsoft Apps Store
The headquarters for iPhone apps is the Apple Store which can be accessed via iTunes. If you are familiar with using iTunes to manage your music files, then the Apple Store is a snap. Here you can browse the 350,000 titles to choose from. There is something for everyone from mobile games, music apps for the musician in you, travel apps to help you find a room or catch a flight as well as fitness applications that can help you track your workouts and get in shape for the summer.
